His approach preserves the current Social Security system for those at or near retirement while providing new options for young people. President Bush understands, rightly, that modernizing Social Security must not change benefits for seniors or near-retirees. The government must not invest Social Security funds in the stock market. At the same time, the President believes that we cannot save Social Security by increasing the payroll tax. The goal of Social Security modernization must be to build a better Social Security system with better benefits, not raise taxes or cut benefits. For younger workers, President Bush supports individual accounts that they control, allowing them to build a nest egg in addition to Social Security. These accounts would keep traditional Social Security as an option for those who want it. This issue is just one more example of how our President is providing the courageous leadership America needs. Call Early: Call early in the show so you can be sure to be included in the program. Plan What You Are Going to Say: Print or write out your talking points to help you plan what you are going to say before you are on the air.
